Common USB outlets can leave charging cables carrying AC electric field. The SafeCharge USB Outlet grounds its USB ports, while the AC receptacle works as normal.
It is a 120V 15 amp receptacle for 12 or 14 AWG wire, with two USB-A ports (5V 2A max), one USB-C port (5V 3A max) and 30 watts of total USB power. Offered in white or black.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does grounded USB mean on an outlet?
The USB ports are connected to ground, so AC electric field is drained away from the cables and devices you charge. The AC receptacle on the same unit works as a normal outlet.
Can I install it myself?
It replaces a standard wall receptacle and takes 12 or 14 AWG wire, so wiring it is a job for a licensed electrician.
Can it charge a laptop?
It tops out at 30 watts of USB power, with 5V 3A on the USB-C port, so it suits phones, tablets and USB lights. For a laptop, see the SafeCharger UltraMac 63.
Does it need a grounded circuit?
Yes. The grounding drains through the circuit's ground connection, so install it on a properly grounded circuit and confirm with a plug-in outlet tester.
Who makes it?
ElectraHealth, founded in 2008 by Shaun Kranish and owned since 2025 by Brian Hoyer, founder of Shielded Healing and The Shielding Shop.
