Common USB outlets can leave the charging cable carrying AC electric field, which can raise your body voltage when you sit or sleep near a charging device.

The SafeCharge USB Outlet has grounded USB ports. Its grounded design drains AC electric fields away from the cables and devices you charge, while the AC receptacle keeps working as normal.

Put it next to the bed, in a kitchen charging station or in an office. It powers anything that runs on USB up to 30 watts, including USB strip lights or fairy lights for a child's room.

It is a 120V 15 amp wall receptacle that takes 12 or 14 AWG wire, in white or black.

Turn off power at the breaker before you start. Have a licensed electrician install the outlet in place of a standard receptacle, using 12 or 14 AWG wire. Connect it to a properly grounded circuit. The USB grounding drains through the outlet's ground connection. Check the finished outlet with a plug-in outlet tester. Plug USB cables into the USB-A or USB-C ports. Keep the total USB load at or under 30 watts. Built for North American outlets (US and Canada): it uses a standard grounded three-prong US plug and is not designed for 230V outlets or other plug types.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does grounded USB mean on an outlet?
The USB ports are connected to ground, so AC electric field is drained away from the cables and devices you charge. The AC receptacle on the same unit works as a normal outlet.
Can I install it myself?
It replaces a standard wall receptacle and takes 12 or 14 AWG wire, so wiring it is a job for a licensed electrician.
Can it charge a laptop?
It tops out at 30 watts of USB power, with 5V 3A on the USB-C port, so it suits phones, tablets and USB lights. For a laptop, see the SafeCharger UltraMac 63.
Does it need a grounded circuit?
Yes. The grounding drains through the circuit's ground connection, so install it on a properly grounded circuit and confirm with a plug-in outlet tester.
Who makes it?
ElectraHealth, founded in 2008 by Shaun Kranish and owned since 2025 by Brian Hoyer, founder of Shielded Healing and The Shielding Shop.
